The Richmond Healthy Food Retail Study team will be presenting and discussing their findings on Aug. 25 at the Ralph Fischer Auditorium located in the Richmond Hospital. See below for more information and to RVSP:

The Richmond Healthy Food Retail Study seeks to improve the availability and capacity of community members to make healthier food choices thereby improving community health and well-being. By improving our understanding of how people make food decisions and the availability of healthy food retail, we can begin to address the range of food and health inequities that disproportionately impact Richmond residents.

This research project has three key components that will improve our understanding of food access in Richmond:

  1. A geospatial analysis of food retail will visually map critical areas of need through the distribution of food retail as related to transportation and housing.
  2. A set of key informant interviews with people living in under-served and low-income neighbourhoods will provide greater depth of understanding of the barriers and issues around food access. Linking personal stories to the larger picture will provide a stronger impetus for decision-makers to take effective action.
  3. An evaluation of the availability of fruits and vegetables relative to non-core foods (e.g. snacks, cakes, soda) in various food retail outlets.

Researchers will present their findings to community stakeholders, local government representatives, and food retailers. In addition, we aim to host a Q & A period that will generate further discussion and direction to this research project.
